Motorsports Glossary
Essential terminology for understanding telemetry analysis, performance metrics, racing strategy, and driver classifications used across IMSA, SRO, and endurance racing.
Performance Metrics
Quantitative measurements used to analyze driver and vehicle performance
Alpha Score
A 0-100 performance metric that quantifies driver pace by comparing lap times within cohorts of similar license class and vehicle specification. Higher scores indicate faster relative performance within the competitive group.
V-Min/V-Max
The minimum and maximum velocities achieved at specific points on track, typically at corner apex (V-Min) and end of straights (V-Max). Key indicators of braking efficiency and power delivery.
Combined-G
The total lateral and longitudinal acceleration forces experienced by the vehicle, measured in gravitational units (G). Indicates how much of the tire's grip is being utilized.
Telemetry & Vehicle Dynamics
Data points captured from vehicle sensors and analysis systems
Yaw
The rotation of the vehicle around its vertical axis. Positive yaw indicates the rear sliding outward (oversteer), negative indicates understeer.
Roll
The rotation of the vehicle around its longitudinal axis, indicating how much the chassis leans during cornering. Affected by spring rates, anti-roll bars, and corner speeds.
Understeer
A handling condition where the front tires lose grip before the rear, causing the car to turn less than the driver commands. The opposite of oversteer.
Racing Terminology
Common terms used in professional motorsports
Balance of Performance (BoP)
Regulations applied to different car models to equalize performance, typically through weight penalties or power restrictions. Aims to create competitive racing between different manufacturers.
Stint
A continuous period of driving between pit stops. Stint length is determined by fuel capacity, tire degradation, and race strategy.
Pace Degradation
The gradual loss of lap time performance over a stint, typically caused by tire wear, fuel load changes, or track conditions evolving.
Driver & Vehicle Classifications
FIA driver ratings and IMSA racing class definitions
Bronze Driver
FIA driver categorization for amateur or gentleman drivers. Bronze-rated drivers are typically paired with higher-rated drivers in professional endurance racing.
Silver Driver
FIA driver categorization for semi-professional drivers. Silver ratings are common for experienced amateurs and young professionals.
Gold/Platinum Driver
FIA driver categorization for professional drivers. Gold and Platinum drivers have demonstrated elite-level performance in major racing series.
GTP (Grand Touring Prototype)
The top prototype class in IMSA WeatherTech Championship featuring manufacturers like Porsche, Cadillac, BMW, and Acura competing with hybrid-powered LMDh and LMH cars.
LMP2 (Le Mans Prototype 2)
Second-tier prototype class featuring spec ORECA chassis with customer teams. Provides a pathway to endurance racing with controlled costs.
GTD (Grand Touring Daytona)
GT3-specification racing class in IMSA featuring production-based cars from Porsche, Ferrari, Mercedes-AMG, BMW, and others. Includes both Pro and Am categories.
GS (Grand Sport)
The top class in IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge featuring GT4-specification cars. Provides competitive GT racing with balanced performance regulations.
TCR (Touring Car Racing)
Touring car class in IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge featuring front-wheel-drive production-based race cars from manufacturers like Honda, Hyundai, and Audi.
